Best job costing software for field service, UK 2026

We compared six providers UK field service businesses shortlist, Joblogic, simPRO, BigChange, Jobber, ServiceM8 and Tradify, on one specific question: does the software show profit and loss per job and per contract as standard, or is job costing missing, simplified, or charged as a higher-tier add-on. Pricing is vendor-published where available, review scores are dated, and there are no competitor logos (see "how we did this" below).

Job costing dashboard showing profit and loss per job and per contract

The short answer

  • Running multi-site maintenance contracts and need profit and loss at both job level and contract level: Joblogic includes this natively across every tier, tied to the compliance work (F-Gas, SFG20) that usually eats into maintenance margin.
  • Want job costing bundled with vehicle tracking and hardware, and don't mind the hardware being compulsory: BigChange, at a higher committed monthly cost.
  • Comfortable with quote-only pricing and want a subcontractor portal: simPRO, though F-Gas sits outside the core system as a marketplace add-on, worth confirming on a demo.
  • Already paying for job costing as a higher-tier add-on elsewhere (Jobber's Grow plan, ServiceM8's £119 tier): worth checking whether a system that includes it as standard costs less once the add-on is priced back in.
  • Small UK trade team wanting simple margin visibility without a lot of setup: Tradify's top tier gives a simplified view, but there's no contract, SLA or stock control at any tier.

Full detail, pricing and sourcing for every one of those calls is below, along with the questions worth asking on a demo call specifically about job costing.

How we did this

Joblogic makes the field service management software this page is partly about, so treat that as a declared interest, not a hidden one. To keep this comparison usable rather than promotional, we set three rules.

Only vendor-published prices are used. Where a provider doesn't publish pricing, simPRO, and BigChange's compulsory hardware cost sits alongside its published licence fee, we've said so directly rather than estimated a number.

Every review score is dated and sourced (Capterra, G2, Trustpilot, or a vendor's own site badge), because these figures move. Where we've carried a figure over from earlier research rather than re-checked it this pass, that's flagged in the vendor section and again in the research notes that accompany this page.

No competitor logos. We've used plain initials badges instead throughout, an editorial choice rather than a legal one, so the page reads as a comparison built from public facts rather than something assembled from competitors' own marketing assets.

Scope note. This page compares six UK-relevant providers only. Names like ServiceTitan, FieldEdge and Workever come up in some searches for job costing software, but they're built for the North American market and aren't realistic shortlist options for a UK service contractor, so they've been left out here rather than included and then ruled out. For a wider nine-platform comparison that does cover the US-focused names, see our best field service management software guide.

Why job costing is worth getting right

"Job costing" gets used loosely, so it's worth being precise about what it means. In field service software, it's tracking labour, parts, travel and subcontractor cost against a specific job, then rolling that cost up against the contract or agreement the job sits under, so a manager can see profit and loss on the job and on the account at the same time. That second part, per contract as well as per job, is where a lot of systems stop short. They'll show what a single visit cost, but not whether a three-year maintenance agreement is still making money once four call-outs and a parts price rise have happened.

It's also commonly bolted on late. A business starts with software built for scheduling and invoicing, and job costing gets added once someone in finance notices margins have drifted and can't say why. By then the gap has usually cost more than the software would have.

What breaks when it's missing, or too shallow, is fairly predictable. Margin becomes visible only after the event, at month end, to finance, rather than to the person who quoted the job in the first place. Extra parts or a change of scope get absorbed into a job without anyone flagging that the margin has moved. And contract renewals get priced on gut feel rather than on what the contract actually cost to run.

This is also one of the highest-intent buying questions we track in AI search. "Best job costing software for field service UK" carries a 52.16% citation rate, the highest we've measured across the buying-guide questions we monitor, and a related question, "Joblogic vs competitors for job costing and profitability", already sees Joblogic mentioned in 97.61% of answers. Neither Joblogic nor simPRO, the provider people ask about most alongside us on this topic, had published a dedicated comparison page for this exact question before now; simPRO's own published content here is a "9 job costing tips" article rather than a buying guide, which is part of why we built this page.

Joblogic logo This is us

Joblogic

Joblogic is UK-built field service management software used by more than 7,000 UK service contractors, spanning gas, HVAC, electrical, fire and security, and facilities management work. Job costing sits in the core system rather than as an add-on: every job and every contract carries live profit and loss, built from labour, parts, purchase orders and subcontractor cost as they're logged, not reconstructed at month end.

Automatic job costing with profit and loss per job and per contract is included on every tier, alongside quoting with enquiry-to-job conversion, stock control with location-based replenishment, purchase orders that match against supplier invoices, and schedules of rates, all feeding the same cost picture rather than sitting in separate systems.

Where this is genuinely strong

  • Native compliance handling, F-Gas via a REFCOM partnership, SFG20, and CP12/LGSR gas certificates, feeds the same job cost picture rather than sitting in a separate system
  • CIS handling and direct integrations with Sage, Xero, QuickBooks, KashFlow and FreeAgent
  • A monthly commitment is available, where several providers on this page default to longer terms

Pricing and reviews

Standard from £45 per user per month, billed annually. Premium and Enterprise pricing is available on request.

Capterra 4.3/5 from 92 reviews (Ease of use 4.3, Support 4.4, Features 4.1, Value 4.0). Trustpilot 4.5/5, independently re-checked September 2026.

See real customer results in the customer proof section below, or browse the full customer stories hub. Relevant by trade: gas engineer software, HVAC software, facilities management software.

SP

simPRO

simPRO is an Australian-founded field service system. It's been majority-backed by K1 Investment Management since a $350m+ growth investment in November 2021, and it expanded further in October 2024 when it acquired BigChange from Great Hill Partners (who retain a minority stake). It's a common shortlist name alongside Joblogic, and the mention rates we track in AI search for job costing questions reflect that.

simPRO advertises automatic job costing with profit and loss per job and per contract, the same capability language Joblogic and BigChange use, plus a built-in subcontractor portal as standard. The point worth checking on a demo call is F-Gas: it sits outside the core system as a third-party marketplace add-on, which matters if compliance cost needs to reconcile against the same job costing view rather than a separate one.

Job costing specifics

  • Per-job and per-contract P&L is a vendor claim, matching Joblogic and BigChange's language
  • Subcontractor portal included as standard
  • F-Gas is a third-party marketplace add-on, not native

Pricing, contract and reviews

Pricing is quote-only, nothing published. Contract terms aren't published either; independent reviewers describe multi-year commitments with annual price increases built into renewal, worth confirming directly. G2 4.4/5 from 768 reviews, confirmed against G2's own seller page. Trustpilot UK 3.4/5, independently re-checked September 2026.

simPRO's own published content on this exact topic is a "9 job costing tips" article rather than a buying guide, part of why we built this page. Read the full Joblogic vs simPRO comparison for the detailed feature breakdown.

BC

BigChange

BigChange bundles software with hardware: a hard-wired vehicle tracker and a rugged tablet or smartphone with a SIM are compulsory parts of the package rather than optional extras. It was acquired by simPRO Group in October 2024.

Automatic job costing with profit and loss per job and per contract is included, the same claim as simPRO and Joblogic, alongside a built-in subcontractor and customer portal.

Pricing

£79.95 a month for the Standard licence, £99.95 a month for Plus, both including the compulsory hardware bundle. That hardware cost is worth weighing against a software-only price elsewhere if you already run vehicle tracking through another provider.

Reviews

Trustpilot UK 3.3/5, independently re-checked September 2026.

Read the full Joblogic vs BigChange comparison for the detailed feature breakdown, including the hardware cost in full.

JB

Jobber

Jobber is built for North American residential and light commercial home services, priced in US dollars with no GBP option, and doesn't carry UK compliance features like CP12, F-Gas, CIS handling or Sage integration. For a UK service contractor, that's worth ruling in or out before pricing even comes into it.

Job costing with profit and loss per job and per contract is included from the Grow tier upward, not on the entry Core plan; two-way SMS and automations are also gated to Grow and above.

Pricing (USD)

Core $49, Connect $139, Grow $199, Plus $699 a month, plus $29 per extra user, with plans capped at 15 included users.

Other figures

Jobber states "100,000+ businesses" and a 4.8 App Store rating on its own marketing. We're presenting those as Jobber's own figures, not independently verified.

Read the full Joblogic vs Jobber comparison for the detailed feature breakdown.

M8

ServiceM8

ServiceM8 is Apple-first by design; Android is relegated to a stripped-down "Lite" app aimed at subcontractors and temporary workers rather than full users. It shipped AI "Smart Helpers" with ServiceM8 14 in September 2025.

Job costing, including markup billing, is gated to the £119-a-month Premium tier and above. Below that tier there's no job costing at all. There's no stock control at any tier, and PPM, SFG20 and F-Gas are only available through the third-party Simpli-fi add-on.

Pricing by job volume

Free for up to 30 jobs a month, £25 for 50 jobs, £59 for 150 jobs (adds assets and forms), £119 for 500 jobs (adds job costing), £269 for 1,500-plus jobs. Users are unlimited on every paid tier. A phone system is extra, from £15 a month.

Worth knowing

No stock control at any tier. Compliance depth beyond the Simpli-fi add-on is limited, so job costing and compliance evidence sit in different places rather than one view.

TF

Tradify

Tradify is owned by The Access Group and run out of Auckland, New Zealand. It's built for small trade teams and says so itself: job costing is deliberately kept simple rather than positioned as a deep reporting system.

Job costing and dashboard reporting are gated to the top tier and are, by Tradify's own description, aimed at small teams needing a quick read on margin rather than per-contract depth. There's no contract, SLA, PPM, asset register or stock control at any tier, and purchase orders are top-tier only.

Pricing

£34 a user a month for Lite, £37 for Pro, £44 for Plus, month to month with no contract.

Worth knowing

A good fixed library of UK gas and electrical certificates for domestic work, but no F-Gas, SFG20, or compliance depth beyond that.

What job costing software should show you

Feature lists tend to say "job costing" and stop there. Here's what that phrase should deliver before you sign anything.

  • Real-time cost capture. Labour, parts, travel and subcontractor cost logged against the job as it happens, not reconstructed at month end.
  • Profit and loss at job level and at contract level. A single call-out and a three-year agreement both need to be readable at a glance, not just the job.
  • Purchase order and stock tie-in. Material cost based on what was actually bought and used against the job, not an estimate carried over from the quote.
  • Margin visible to the person who quoted the job, not only to finance once the job is closed and it's too late to act on it.
  • Compliance cost captured natively. F-Gas, SFG20 and CIS cost should be part of the same job cost picture, not tracked in a separate add-on that has to be reconciled by hand.
  • The original quote kept visible against actual cost, so a mid-job change of scope is obvious rather than absorbed silently.

Questions worth asking on a demo call, specifically about job costing

Feature lists and pricing pages can only tell you so much. These eight questions surface the gaps this page has flagged, on your own contract types and job volume.

  1. Can I see profit and loss for a single job and for the whole contract, in the same view?
  2. Where does labour cost come from: timesheets, GPS-tracked hours, or manual entry?
  3. Is job costing included in the price I'm being quoted, or is it a higher tier?
  4. If I need F-Gas, SFG20 or CIS handling, is that native or a third-party add-on, and does it feed into the cost data?
  5. Can the person who quoted the job see the live margin, or does that sit with finance only?
  6. How does a purchase order or supplier invoice update the job cost, and how quickly?
  7. What happens to job costing data when a quote gets revised mid-job? Does the original margin stay visible?
  8. What's the minimum contract length, and does the price increase at renewal?

Frequently asked questions

What does job costing mean in field service software?

It means tracking labour, parts, travel and subcontractor cost against a specific job, then rolling that cost up against the contract the job sits under, so profit and loss is visible at both levels rather than just one.

Is job costing included in Joblogic's price, or is it an add-on?

It's included as standard on every tier, starting from £45 per user per month billed annually on the Standard plan. It isn't gated to a higher tier.

Which providers charge extra for job costing?

Jobber gates it to the Grow tier and above (from $199 a month), and ServiceM8 gates it to the £119-a-month Premium tier and above; below that tier ServiceM8 has no job costing at all.

What's the difference between job-level and contract-level job costing?

Job-level costing shows the profit or loss on a single visit or task. Contract-level costing rolls several jobs up against the agreement they sit under, showing whether an ongoing maintenance contract is still profitable once every call-out and parts cost is counted. Joblogic, simPRO and BigChange all advertise both levels; Tradify and ServiceM8's job costing is closer to job-level detail.

How does job costing interact with compliance work like F-Gas or SFG20?

In Joblogic, F-Gas (through a REFCOM partnership) and SFG20 are native, so compliance-related cost feeds the same job costing picture. In simPRO, F-Gas is a third-party marketplace add-on, worth confirming on a demo how that cost data reconciles against the core job cost. Tradify and ServiceM8 have limited or third-party compliance handling only.

Can a small trade team use job costing without it feeling too heavy?

Tradify's top tier gives a simplified job costing and dashboard view aimed at small teams, though there's no contract, SLA or stock control at any tier. ServiceM8's job costing only appears once a business reaches the £119-a-month, 500-job tier.

Do all of these providers publish their prices?

No. Joblogic, BigChange, Jobber, ServiceM8 and Tradify publish at least entry-level pricing. simPRO is quote-only, so its cost has to be confirmed directly.

What review scores were used, and when were they checked?

Joblogic's Capterra score (4.3 out of 5 from 92 reviews) and Trustpilot score (4.5 out of 5) are current at time of writing. simPRO's Trustpilot score (3.4 out of 5) and BigChange's Trustpilot score (3.3 out of 5) were independently re-checked in September 2026. simPRO's G2 score (4.4 out of 5 from 768 reviews) is confirmed against G2's own seller page.

Why doesn't this guide include providers like ServiceTitan, FieldEdge or Workever?

Those providers are built for the North American market and aren't realistic options for a UK service contractor comparing job costing software, so they've been left out of this specific comparison rather than included and then ruled out.

How does this page relate to Joblogic's wider best field service management software guide?

This page focuses specifically on job costing. For a broader comparison across scheduling, compliance, mobile working and more, see the wider best field service management software guide.

The fastest way to judge any of this is to ask the questions above on an actual demo call, using your own contract types and job volume rather than a slide.
